They’re having fun, and it shows.
The siblings and staff at Mei Mei Street Kitchen were all bright and smiley, quickly and efficiently serving the line of people waiting patiently for a rice ball, a sandwich, a dumpling. The enthusiastic service, coupled with the lovely spring weather, seemed to put everyone in a jovial mood, seemed to make the crowd anticipate the food even more eagerly.
I had a day off last week and I was in the Boylston area for lunch. As luck would have it, so was the Mei Mei truck, parked in front of the Boston Public Library. They’re yet another one of Boston’s food trucks, and they’re serving modern Chinese-American food.
I read the menu quickly and easily decided on my order: the kale salad (which may have magic powers – more on this later), the deep fried porky rice ball, and the Celtics ball, plus a crimson berry iced tea.
It was the day after the Celtics’ amazing come-back win for Game 5 against the Heat, and I felt even more compelled to order anything Celtic-related. Truth.
I’m glad I did, because the two rice balls were pretty phenomenal. They were essentially arancini – one was stuffed with tender shredded pork while the other was a spinach-and cheese version.
I opted to add a poached egg to the kale salad (kale, feta, rice wine vinaigrette, and garlic panko breadcrumbs)…
… which turned out to be a wise decision. I loved this meal in a cup (reminds me of egg in a jar, but healthier, way healthier). It was so good I think I may have actually giggled out loud.
Why I giggle at good food, I don’t know, but it was also around this time when a cute guy sat beside me and started making small talk. Within minutes he was asking me out, but within seconds I found out he was 21 years old. I politely declined the date invitation and proceeded to eat my salad – that magical kale salad which somehow transformed me into a girl who gets asked out by someone ten years younger.
It turns out kale really is a super food.
So thanks, Mei Mei peeps! Your fun (and youth) is contagious, and your food is wonderful, fresh, and truly delicious.
Check out Mei Mei by visiting their website and blog (menus updated daily), then go find them!
