Taste of Perkins
What if you can’t see what you are eating? What if you have someone beside you giving you “clues” about your food, and asking you about the flavors? You can only rely on your own sense of taste to find out.
I would like to invite everyone to the 2009 Taste of Perkins event for a very fun and inspiring evening. This is an annual fund raising event held by the Perkins School for the Blind, featuring a night of blind food and wine tastings, prize drawings, a silent auction and more.
As some of you may know, my sister Monica is deaf-blind and graduated from Perkins in 2005. Perkins has a very special place in my heart: it changed my sister’s life, it changed my family’s life, and it is helping thousands of other children and adults have productive, meaningful lives. Last June, the boyfriend and I ran the Vision 5K marathon to raise money for Perkins and it was one of my most memorable experiences ever! It is truly gratifying to be able to help out and support this wonderful school and its amazing students.
I am also regular volunteer at Perkins and I was at the first Taste of Perkins event last year as a “food aide”. I had to describe the bite-size morsels of gourmet foods to blindfolded participants. It was an interesting (and challenging!) experience because I could not mention the actual food, but could only describe it and talk about the flavors. Now that I am taking this Food Writing class at Harvard, I am hoping I will be better with my descriptions!
The event will be held on Tuesday, October 6th, at the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown. It starts at 5:30 pm and ends at 7:30 pm. Event tickets cost $50 per person, and raffle tickets for the prize drawings cost $25 each (you don’t have to be at the event to participate in the raffle). All proceeds benefit the Perkins School for the Blind. If you want more information, please do not hesitate to contact me. And please invite your friends and family. Hope to see you there!
