Tequila at Mija

Remember when Turtle was trying to do business with Avion?

Well, Avion tequila is REAL, and it is GOOD. I was able to try it for the first time at Mija last week.

Now for those of you who think I’m speaking in tongues (Turtle? Avion? Mija?) I assure you that I can explain, and that I not referring to a little reptile.

The Turtle I am referring to is actually a character in the HBO series Entourage. Last season, he and main character Vinny Chase were working with a premium tequila called Avion. And Mija is Boston’s latest cantina and tequila bar.

I predict that Mija is going to be one of the city’s most popular spots, especially for tequila fans like me. I mean, they only have 150 different tequilas, assembling the most extensive tequila selection in Massachusetts. No biggie. And Mija is beautiful. All leather seats and wooden high ceilings, it is the best sight for sore eyes in tourist-ridden Faneuil Hall.

... where I had my first shot of Tequila Avion

And it was one smooth, straight up shot. We had the anejo variety, which is a tequila that is aged for at least one year to three years. Avion was rich and smoky, with vanilla flavors and hints of coconut. I loved it.

That night, I also discovered what may now be my favorite shooter:

do you know what a Baby Guinness is?

first you start with Patron Cafe, then you top it with Baileys

Yes, coffee flavored tequila, topped with Baileys. Delicious. A Baby Guinness can also be made with other coffee liqueurs (like Kahlua), but always topped with a layer of Irish cream, so that the little shot glasses look like mini glasses of Guinness. So cute. And did I mention delicious?

that's me with my friends Marcus and Eric holding their Baby Guinnesses (because I already downed mine as soon as the bartender finished making it)

Mija also serves Mexican cuisine, which I will certainly come back for in the future. I checked out the menu and saw that they offer seared Manchego cheese. And  lobster-jalapeno tacos. And a tres leches cake. Plus all that tequila! (Did the owners hack into the favorite foods section of my brain??) I’m glad to see a new upscale Mexican cantina in town, and I can’t wait to go back.

Do you like tequila? And tell me about your favorite shots/cocktails!
